Data Privacy

Emma brings to XL Law & Consulting deep understanding of international and domestic privacy law compliance and is experienced in developing and implementing compliance programs within uniquely decentralized higher education environments.

 

Emma most recently worked for the University of Denver, where she served as senior leadership’s subject matter expert on international and domestic data privacy compliance and led the conceptualization and execution of the University’s risk-based approach to international data privacy compliance, focusing on General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Emma’s duties there included working closely with General Counsel to draft and negotiate data protection addendums in compliance with GDPR and Colorado Privacy Act. She also regularly developed compliance checklists, risk summaries, legal development trackers, and other resources to aid senior leadership and other internal risk owners in gauging the University’s risk tolerance and developing compliant practices that are consistent with its risk tolerance.

Emma has experience overseeing a University-wide records management program, including maintaining the University’s records retention schedule and working with diverse stakeholders throughout the University to promote fundamental data privacy principles, such as data minimization and storage limitation. Her broader compliance responsibilities have included creating and maintaining a University
